The combined effort of intercepts and cryptanalysis for the whole of the British forces in World War II came under the code name "Ultra" managed from Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. Bletchley Park's commanding officer Edward Travis acquired a £100,000 budget for the construction of Turing's machine, and the contract to build the bombes was awarded to the British Tabulating Machine Company (BTM) at Letchworth. He retired in 1977, and in 1991 the British Academy elected him as a Senior Fellow. Most of the above is just my take on things. I know there are a number of editors watching this page - the article was quite a large collaborative effort - so I think it would do no harm to see what others think. Winterbotham's The Ultra Secret is also a historically important publication because it was one of the earliest disclosures in English of the Ultra programme, but it is inaccurate in many regards.
